WHY SHOULD I BE CAREFUL WHILE BUYING A DOMAIN?
If you are a serious blogger where your blog has to run for years and do carry a great content in it then,” you should be careful while buying a domain”.
A domain is like an address to your website [THE WEB ADDRESS]. Do you change your residential address, frequently? If so, you may lose your identity.
In the same way, webpages with a specific domain address will be ranked by search engines regularly. This helps in finding your webpages easily on search results. Whenever a person types something related to your webpage in Google or Bing, your webpage results will be displayed as a part of search results.
Any change in URL of your post, these ranked pages in Google will lose their links. It will have a greater impact on your website traffic. It can also hinder the growth of your website.
Hence “you cannot and should not change your URL frequently”.
Let me explain it with my example.
THE STORY GOES LIKE THIS…..
I made a BIG MISTAKE in the beginning days of my blogging. I bought “A DOMAIN FOR ECONOMICAL PRICE” for one of my blogs. It was a mouth-watering deal. I successfully completed 54 posts in that blog by the end of the year.
The blog was in a good position, ranked better in Google web page results. It got more than 1000 visitors per day. Everything was good, and I was pretty happy with the performance of the blog.
After a year, the domain service provider mailed me about the renewal of my domain, I was surprised when I read the mail. It was about the renewal charges of my domain. The charges were almost double the charges that I paid for the first year.
I was in a dilemma whether to renew it or not. This was one of my biggest mistakes that ruined my blog.
This thinking dragged me to go for a new domain. I opted for another domain name, which came for an economical price. But, this time I have checked the renewal charges and have opted for a longterm cheap domain.
Now the real story begins.
I was continuing to post at least 1 post daily (minimum of 6 posts per week). But suddenly I noticed a drastic drop in the visitor’s count to my blog.
I didn’t get 3 to 4 visitors per day. I was unable to view my previously ranked pages on Google. This was disgusting. What happened to my previous posts, which used to appear in Google search results?
I was surprised by this situation. I was checking all the possible reasons for this. I asked one of my friend who was an SEO expert to audit my blog for any changes. Then he came out with this result.
We should not change our domain address frequently. This can have a huge impact on the Search engine optimization of your website or blog.
Search engines don’t like web pages which change their address frequently. John lincoln, CEO of Ignite Visibility, says that, even a slight change in the URL of your website can literally kill your web traffic .
Google recommends to use 301 redirects in case of any change in the URL. Never change the web addresses of previously published web pages without 301 redirects. Otherwise all the search engine results of your web pages turn into “DEAL LINKS”. This can ruin your search engine rankings.
This was a big lesson that I learnt from domain purchase. I never thought that it will have a huge impact on my blog ranking. I had to literally start from scratch again. All the visitor bank that I built has gone in vain. It took me another 1 year to get back my visitor traffic.
Hence I recommend you to prevent the same mistake while buying a domain. Be cautious and think cleverly while buying it. Buying domain for your website or blog is something that you should view in a long-term perspective.
HOW TO SELECT A BEST DOMAIN SERVICE PROVIDER WHILE BUYING A DOMAIN?
Buying a domain is one thing that you should not do in haste. But many people opt for cheap domains deliberately knowing that they have to pay high renewal charges. This is because, they have no idea where their website is going to rank in future, and also the amount of web traffic they will gain as time passes. But once your website ranks better and is getting good organic traffic, then YOU ARE FORCED TO PAY HUGE RENEWAL CHARGES, as there is no other option left. In such cases, I have seen many people doing the same mistake that I have done and lost their web traffic.
A unique and permanent domain address is a strong foundation for your site or blog traffic.
Here are a few simple steps to buy a domain in an economical way.
SEARCH FOR DOMAIN EXTENSIONS THAT SUIT YOUR BLOG
On web we see many ads related to domain sales. Some offer domains at greater discounts. But it is always beneficial to buy a domain from industry leaders or providers with a good reputation.
Let me explain it with my example. Once I bought a domain from a provider. But their after sales service was not up to the mark. I found it hard while renewing the domain. The service centre was literally non-responsive. I thought of transferring my domain to another provider, with whom I was happy and had few domains running for my blogs. After a strenuous effort, I was successful in contacting the service centre. But when I asked them to transfer my domain, they were not at all co-operative and charged a lump sum.
“Prevention is better than cure”
Hence always opt to buy domains from good and well-known service providers, if you are running a serious blog.
MAKE A LIST OF DOMAIN EXTENSIONS THAT YOU LIKE
The domain extension is something that brings worth to your website. There are varieties of domain extensions available. If you want to have a worldwide generalised web address, then .COM domain extension is the best. It has become an established brand for credibility.
This is because most of the high profile websites run on .COM domain. Andrew fischerCEO and Creative Director of NURV, in his blog reported that 46% of websites run on .COM extensions .
People tend to search a website or blog by typing the blog name with a “.com” extension in the end (www.example.com). Hence if you are targeting worldwide traffic, then .com extension is a good option.
There are many good alternatives to .COM. If your blog is about information then you can opt for .INFO EXTENSION. There are a bunch of domain extensions available. You can opt for one that best suits your website or blog.
Choose domains that describe your website
MARK THE TYPE AND PRICES OF DOMAIN EXTENSIONS
This is a serious thing to be discussed. Never buy a domain because it is cheap. I prefer noting down all the domain extensions which are reasonable economical and carry some meaning with them. For example a blog address like www.blog.com or website.org is more meaningful than blog.xyz or website.xyz. At the same time buying a meaningful domain extension which is priced higher is also not a good option to opt for.
Always buy meaningful domain extensions at economical prices. Search 3 or more service providers before taking a decision, as the same domain is offered for different prices by different domain sellers.
So make a list of meaningful domain extensions which fall into economical price range.
CHECK FOR THEIR RENEWAL CHARGES
Always check their renewable charges before taking a domain. for example, a domain of $2 with renewal charges of $20 is of less worth than another domain of $10 with renewal charges of $18. Think wisely and have a long term look over these purchases.
You are not going to purchase this domain for one year, you should repurchase this domain at regular intervals (either one year or more) as long as you run your website or blog.
A good domain seller always reveals the renewal charges at the time of first purchase itself. Hence opt for a good seller, do not get trapped under the name of cheap domain, and waste your hard earned money.
SELECT THE BEST DOMAIN WITH REASONABLE PRICE AND RENEWAL CHARGES.
Always select a meaningful domain at a reasonable price with economic renewal plans. This is what I have learnt after years of experience. Today we have many domain service provides, with mouth-watering deals. But many of them are a mere trap. So decided cautiously and select smartly.
Here is a 6 step questionnaire guide that everyone should answer before purchasing a domain. If they have convincing answers for all these 6 questions, then I think they can go with the domain purchase with that seller.
IS THE DOMAIN SELLER GENUINE?
DOES HE HAVE GOOD TRACK RECORD?
IS THE AFTER SALES SERVICE GOOD?
IS THE INITIAL AND RENEWAL PRICES OF THE DOMAIN ECONOMICAL?
IS THE PROCESS OF DOMAIN REGISTRATION ON YOUR BLOG OR WEBSITE SIMPLE?
WHAT ARE THE DOMAIN TRANSFER CHARGES?
I think at the end of this article, you now have a decent idea on buying a domain for your blog or website. If you like the article, please do share with your friends.
